Moving abroad from Switzerland: belongings you leave behind
An international move has two inventories: what travels with you and what stays behind.
Rehomeo editorial · Editorial draft · prepared 12 October 2026 · not yet published
An international move has two inventories: what travels with you and what stays behind. Rehomeo’s clearance enquiry concerns the second list. Customs, freight and delivery to your next home are separate matters and should not be bundled into assumptions about pickup.
Plan the details
Make decisions before packing closes off rooms. Confirm ownership for shared or rented furniture, and consider whether a useful piece has a realistic recipient before your departure. If someone will provide access after you leave, agree their role and authority. Never leave the whole plan dependent on an unconfirmed enquiry or an inaccessible key.
A practical example
If you leave before collection, appointing a friend to unlock the door does not by itself establish who can approve scope changes. Agree that authority, access times and a way to contact the responsible person. Keep the confirmed inventory available to them so that belongings meant for export are not included by mistake.
Create a small handover pack for the person remaining locally: the agreed inventory, collection date, access instructions and contact method. Keep sensitive documents out of that pack unless necessary. Tell them which decisions are already approved and which require your confirmation. Check that they can recognise what stays. Do not leave expensive or sentimental possessions in an ambiguous area and assume that another person will infer your intentions from where you put them.
Your checklist
- Split travel and clearance inventories.
- Confirm ownership.
- State your departure and handover dates.
- Agree an authorised access contact.
- Keep confirmation documents available.
Sources and limitations
Longer use can reduce waste and demand for replacement products. The outcome depends on condition, transport, storage and actual reuse. We do not calculate or promise carbon savings. The environmental context is general, not a measurement of this service. FOEN explains that the whole life cycle must be considered when assessing outcomes. No per-item or collection-level savings are claimed here. BAFU / FOEN / OFEV / UFAM.
Before agreeing collection
Customers pay for collection and clearance unless another arrangement is explicitly agreed. A possible donation does not make transport free. An enquiry starts a conversation. It does not reserve a collection. How it works.
