Practical guides
What makes used furniture suitable for reuse?
Useful furniture should be safe, reasonably clean and practical for another home.

Useful furniture should be safe, reasonably clean and practical for another home. A familiar mark or minor cosmetic defect may be acceptable to someone; unstable joints, damp or missing essential parts need a different assessment. Suitability is decided case by case, not by brand or age alone.
Plan the details
Describe what you know and what you have not checked. Open drawers, count shelves and keep fixings with the correct piece. Explain any odour, pest concern or repair history before collection. Photos can help later but are optional at enquiry stage. A recipient’s dimensions and needs matter as much as an item’s appearance.
A practical example
For a wardrobe, report whether the doors close, shelves are present and the structure remains stable. Missing decorative trim is not the same as missing fittings needed to assemble it. Do not conceal a problem behind a photograph of the front. If you cannot assess a feature safely, say that it has not been checked.
Assess usefulness without turning your home into a repair workshop. Record observable facts: a drawer does not close, one shelf is absent, or a leg is loose. Avoid declaring an electrical item safe simply because its indicator lights up. Where a check would be unsafe or specialist knowledge is needed, mark the uncertainty. Honest information helps distinguish cosmetic wear from an issue that prevents use, and lets acceptance be discussed before the item is moved.
Your checklist
- Check stability without taking risks.
- List defects and missing parts.
- Measure width depth and height.
- Keep hardware and instructions together.
- Disclose damp or pest concerns.
Sources and limitations
Longer use can reduce waste and demand for replacement products. The outcome depends on condition, transport, storage and actual reuse. We do not calculate or promise carbon savings. The environmental context is general, not a measurement of this service. FOEN explains that the whole life cycle must be considered when assessing outcomes. No per-item or collection-level savings are claimed here. BAFU / FOEN / OFEV / UFAM.
Before agreeing collection
Customers pay for collection and clearance unless another arrangement is explicitly agreed. A possible donation does not make transport free. An enquiry starts a conversation. It does not reserve a collection. How it works.
