Giving furniture a second life: why reuse matters
Reuse keeps a product performing its original function instead of immediately processing it as waste.

Reuse keeps a product performing its original function instead of immediately processing it as waste. A usable table can continue being a table. The practical question is whether another person can actually use it, not simply whether it can be removed from your apartment.
Plan the details
Consider condition, repair needs, transport and the likelihood of a suitable recipient. Keeping an unwanted piece in storage indefinitely is not evidence of reuse. A realistic handover plan gives the item a better chance of useful service. Do not equate collection with donation or assume that any route creates a measurable carbon saving.
A practical example
A scratched solid table with all its parts may deserve a different route from a swollen board cabinet. Describe both honestly instead of grouping them as “good furniture”. A planned recipient and a feasible journey make the first case more concrete. The second may need separate handling agreed before anyone arrives.
Ask what would need to happen for the item to replace a purchase or remain useful for longer. This is a decision aid, not a lifecycle calculation. A realistic repair and local handover may make sense; a complicated route with uncertain demand requires more caution. Preserve the information needed by the next person, such as dimensions and assembly instructions. Do not remove useful parts simply to make the object easier to carry.
Your checklist
- Describe the condition honestly.
- Check whether simple repair is worthwhile.
- Keep matching parts together.
- Ask how the next home will be arranged.
- Do not promise environmental savings.
Sources and limitations
Longer use can reduce waste and demand for replacement products. The outcome depends on condition, transport, storage and actual reuse. We do not calculate or promise carbon savings. The environmental context is general, not a measurement of this service. FOEN explains that the whole life cycle must be considered when assessing outcomes. No per-item or collection-level savings are claimed here. BAFU / FOEN / OFEV / UFAM.
Before agreeing collection
Customers pay for collection and clearance unless another arrangement is explicitly agreed. A possible donation does not make transport free. An enquiry starts a conversation. It does not reserve a collection. How it works.
